SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

The Graphic Arts Technician, design and develops conduct technical work in applied and graphic arts, in support of the Cree School Board's iiyiyiuiyihtiwin Research and Development strategy, that has the end goal of equipping the CSB to develop high-quality iiyiyiu academic models and competencies to support student success, provide language and culture expertise across CSB, and enable inspired teaching.

The Graphic Arts Technician will be part of the creative team of the Communications and Community Relations Department (CCR) and assigned to iiyiyiuiyihtiwin Research and Development and supervised for daily tasks by the Coordinator of CCR. The Graphic Artist Technician will design and execute material for school board publications, including presentations and photography. 

iiyiyiuiyihtiwin is Cree ways of knowing, doing, and being. iR&D is central to the CSB Strategic Action Plan. It involves the establishment of the iiyiyiuiyihtiwin Research and Development Department. The department encompasses a variety of offerings from providing guidelines, to developing CSB academic models, to remaining abreast of leading practices of indigenous language in education. 


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Departmental Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Director and Coordinators of iiyiyiuiyihtiwin Research and Development in the development and execution of the departmental strategic initiatives and annual action plan for iR&D.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of departmental initiatives, processes, internal procedures and policies, and ensure monitoring, as well as compliance in line with key performance measures.
  • Implement and maintain up-to-date efficient and effective systems, databases/ files and administrative standards that respond to the needs of the department while supporting the overall organization and ensuring alignment with legal and governance requirements.
  • Establish and maintain effective communications and relations within his/her sector, across the CSB and with external stakeholders.
  • Provide pertinent information to and respond to queries from internal and external stakeholders, as required.

Functional Responsibilities:

Main Tasks

The principal and customary work of an employee in this class of employment consists in developing and conducting technical work in the areas of applied and graphic arts.

Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with all members of the iR&D team 
  • Designs and carries out technical work, such as illustration, formatting, layout and artwork of school board publications; he or she determines the specifications and the printing methods, corrects proofs and monitors the printing quality.
  • He or she designs and develops Web pages or other presentations on various computer mediums, using the appropriate software. If necessary, scans documents, performs computer graphics retouching and creates sound files and animation.
  • He or she takes digital photos to use in various publications.
  • He or she provides advice to the staff on the artistic component of the presentations and the choice of media and computer-based support.
  • He or she designs and produces layouts.
  • In his or her work, the employee ensures that copyright and licensing rights are respected.
  • He or she uses a computer and the necessary software to perform his or her duties related to desktop publishing, drawing, graphic design, computer graphics and multimedia presentation; conducts research on the Internet and may be required to assist a staff member with software specific to his or her work.
  • He or she may be required to train less experienced technicians as well as coordinate the work of support staff in performing duties related to the implementation of programs involving technical operations for which he or she is responsible.
  • If need be, he or she performs any other related duty

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Certification 

  • Knowledge of iiyiyiuiyihtiwin (Cree ways of knowing, doing, and being)
  • Hold a Diploma of College Studies in Graphic Design or a diploma or an attestation of studies recognized as equivalent by the competent authority or equivalent experience

Experience

  • 2 years of relevant experience
  • Graphic Design
  • Visual Communications
  • Demonstrable expertise of Adobe Creative Suite applications (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustration and After Effects).
  • Knowledge of design principles including typography, colour, composition, layout, etc.
  • High understanding of production printing processes. 
  • Familiarity with use of digital cameras and accessories to support projects is an asset. 
  • Understanding of web design best practices.

Language

  • Oral Cree is required 
  • Oral and written English is required

Assets

  • Written Cree is an asset
  • French is an asset

  • Knowledge of related areas such as instructional design, Cree culture and history, and language

Other/ working conditions

  • Travel is required, typically across iiyiyiu aschii and occasionally to Montreal or similar.
